5 easy steps to make your own lamp
Lamps and frames, we explain the process step by step so that its realization is the easiest and simplest way. Another application of decorative fabrics is the realization of lampshades, since their fabric, in addition to being a translucent material, can coordinate and set the scene with the rest of the environment.
To obtain adequate rigidity, different metal frames are needed on which the chosen fabric is glued or sewn following different techniques. In addition, these metallic structures allow to easily hold the lampshade.
They are usually made on cardboard, parchment or corrugated fabric. Sometimes, the material itself usually acts as a structure, so the frame is limited to a few rings to hold the lamp to the shade. In fact, most screens are sold ready-made and manufactured industrially.
They usually use semicircular or flat frames and are used to cover wall lamps.
In this case, we tend to use fabrics that in their natural drape are already stretched and structured with frames. These models lend themselves more to being made with decorative fabrics.
Build a frame for the lamp
In the case of frames for lamps, the screens are usually made of non-rigid materials, with a frame that structures them and that serves as a support to attach them to the lamp. These frames can be bought in specialized stores, and they can also be made to measure. These frames are typically made of painted steel to prevent the material from rusting and staining the fabric. Although it is not normally necessary to cover the frame, if desired you can make a rigid screen. For this, a 1.5 or 2 cm wide cotton tape is used that is rolled into rods until they are completely covered, since they are usually finished with a few stitches or with a little adhesive to make them move.
To calculate the necessary fabric for a screen, it will depend on the type of model chosen and the properties of the fabric in question. To make a pattern of the projection of the screen, to know both the length and the width of the fabric. If what you want is to make gathered or pleated models, you should measure the height of the vertical rods to know the size of the cloths. The length of the lower hoop has to be multiplied by 1.5 or 2, which will serve to determine the width of the fabric. In all cases the allowance for the seams, seams and hems of the overall material must be calculated.
Steps to follow to make pleated fabric lampshade
- Cut the necessary fabric and sew the ends to make a band continuous, to cover the frame with a cotton tape.
- Pleat the top of the fabric with pins and hold the upper ring with tweezers, so that the cloth, when falling, let the tables mark.
- Sew the tables below the frame taped, by means of a hem to finish.
- Sew pleated fabric to the hem arc top of the frame also making a hem.
- Cover the seams with a tape that can be made by means of a sewing or from adhesive textile.
