Scholarships for research in nanoelectronics

NSF and Semiconductor Research Fund 12 Nanoelectronics Research Fellowships

The National Science Foundation (NSF) and Semiconductor Research have joined forces to fund 12 nanoelectronics research grants worth $ 20 million; Each scholarship will last for four years.

The 12 interdisciplinary research teams from the 24 participating universities in the United States will focus on the development of a novel switching mechanism that uses innovations in nanoelectronics as a substitute for current transistors.

Jeff Welser, Director of Semiconductor Research at the Nanoelectronics Research Initiative (NRI), stated that the search for new semiconductor equipment that will make the U.S. a market leader in nanoelectronics is dependent on discoveries made at these sophisticated universities.

Dr. Lawrence Goldberg, who works as a Senior Engineering Advisor at NSF, stated that the “Nanoelectronics for 2020 and Beyond” (NEB) competition is part of the National Nanotechnology Initiative and has the aim to foster the development and application of innovative nanofabrication methods and unique concepts for the fabrication of advanced materials, systems, devices and architectures to enhance the field of nanoelectronics. The 12 joint NSF-NRI grants expand and reinforce the commitment of this public-private partnership program.

Companies such as Texas Instruments, Micron Technology, Intel, IBM, and GLOBALFOUNDRIES participate in the NRI. These companies choose researchers to collaborate with the university teams.
