06/20: A single electron counter breaks a new record

Physicists in Japan have created a device that can detect individual electrons flowing backwards or forwards. The device, which is the most sensitive ammeter to date, makes it possible to measure, for the first time, currents in the attoampere range (10-18).

The device could be used for a wide variety of applications, including nanoelectronics, calibration devices, quantum computing, and biology (Science 312-1634).
